The Sutton Hoo Sword Also Knownas King Raedwood Sword stands as a symbol of the transformation from paganism to Christianity in early medieval England, a period marked by profound cultural and religious shifts. The grave goods, including this sword, reveal the connection Anglo-Sexton England and other contemporary cultures, highlighting the Intricate web of trade and influence during the 7th century.

The Sutton Hoo Sword is part of a long tradition of Germacic swords that began during the late Roman period when some of the tribes, at least those in the north , adopted Roman calvary swords, the spatha, and began to make it their own. The evidence for this comes from many bog finds, particularly those in Nydam, Kragehul, Vimose and Illerup Adal. Apart from details of decoration, fuller and to some extent length, the blade shape and type continued in use until well into medieval period. In terms of decoration, the type reaches its zenith during the 6th and 7th centuries with gold and jewel encrusted hills and highly decorative Scabbard. After that time , swords, even highl status ones, become better balance with heavier pommels, but plainer by comparison.

The original Sword was found in the famous Mound 1 ship burial at Sutton Hoo , Suffolk England in 1939. The burial Mound has been dated to the early 7th century and current consensus in that the inhabitant was probably King Raedwood whom died in about 625 A.D. it also contained the largest known buried ship at more than 90 feet in length There are some 19 known mounds at Sutton Hoo and most of them were robbed, probably during Elizabethan Time. Apart form the Mound 1 Sword only other has been recovered from the site so far and that was found in Mound 17 Like Mound 1, that one was also not successfully robbed.

The sword has a Pattern-Welded Iron Blade. This method gave the blade a intricately pattern appearance resembling herringbone or snake like markings. The sword is richly furnished with gold fittings. The pommel is inlayed with Garnet Cloisonne, the guards are made from gold plates , and the grip has two gold mounts decorated with delicate filigree.
